Fishermen Have No Competitors

January 13 2015 l ndbs

I was asked a question by a mentoree during mentorship session: “How do I deal with competitors in the area?” And immediately the thought of fisherman dropped in my mind.  I pictured a fisherman on the bank of the dam with other fishermen nearby.  What came strongly is that every fisherman is focused on their fishing line to see if it moves and their attention is on the fishing rod that is held tight by the hands which makes it difficult to lose focus.  The only time they look aside is when another fisherman screams after catching a fish and that will be short lived as everybody is back to their fishing rods which have not caught fish yet.  For fishermen to concentrate on their rods than on the competitors they adhere to the following:

Stay Focused on their Rod

It is easy for a fish to pull the rod away if the fisherman loses focus and chit chat.  Sometimes you might think there is no one by the bank as all fishermen are concentrating on their fishing line observing any move to act quickly.  Similar principle can help in business as instead of looking at what the competitor is doing one can focus on their product and service.  Fishermen do not care much who is nearby with fishing rod, their eyes are on their fishing line, as entrepreneur do not panic over competitors

They do not make too much noise

Fishermen stay focused and concentrate on the water and most of the time they are quite.  The only time one will be heard screaming is when they catch a fish, a big fish, otherwise they do not scream if the fish is too small, they simply return it to water silently.  Know when is time to celebrate and when is time to work hard.  There are some deals that you do not even have to make noise about but keep looking for bigger deals that you can open a bottle of Champaign over.  When one fisherman catches a big fish everybody celebrated with that person, learn to give your competitor a call and congratulate them for the business deal they have sealed.

Fishermen share the spoil and share experience

When a fisherman goes fishing with a competitor and the competitor happens to catch nothing, they do share the spoil or invite each other to enjoy the only fish they caught, while enjoying the fish they also advice each other on how to fish better.  This is one principle that entrepreneurs can flourish if they can learn to practice, alone you may not be able to meet the demand of your clients, instead of being greedy and lose clients you can share the spoil with your competitors who are able to service the market.

There are enough fish for everyone in a dam, throw your fishing rod and wait for yours than always starring at your fellow fisherman’s rod if it is moving.  Celebrate the success of your competitors while staying focused on catching fish for yourself.

Keep fishing at your spot, one of the fish has a coin for you.

Act Like Antrepreneur, live  like Entrepreneur

May 19 2014 l ndbs

Ants are interesting insects and unlike lions that you have to find in the zoo, they are found in rural and urban areas.  They travel without boundaries and  work hard for their food no wonder they got special mention in the bible, Proverbs 6:5-6 ““Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise” .  In studying their lifestyle one discovered that there is much to learn from such a tiny creature than could learn from a lion.
