SA Recorded Trade Surplus For First Time In 2016

 May 31  2016  16:35 l

SOUTH Africa recorded a trade surplus of R430m in April, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) reported on Tuesday.

A Trading Economics forecast was for a deficit of R1.7bn, while the Bloomberg consensus was for a R2.55bn deficit.

March’s trade surplus was revised down to R2.03bn from the preliminary estimate of R2.92bn that SARS previously reported.

SARS said April’s surplus was due to exports of R92.22bn and imports of R91.79bn, decreasing from a revised surplus of R2.03bn in March. Exports decreased 3.2% from March to April and imports decreased 1.5%.

Investec said in an economics note on Monday that April’s trade account typically incurred a deficit, but this year’s outcome was likely to be influenced by the timing of the Easter holidays, which fell in March compared with April last year.

SA recorded a trade surplus — the first for this year — in March as the growth in exports outpaced that of imports.

The latest data suggest that demand is slowly picking up in SA’s trade partner countries and that the weaker rand is limiting growth in imports. A weak rand makes imports more expensive.

On a month-on-month basis, SA exported fewer mineral products (down 3%) and base metals and precious metals (down 10%) while exporting more vehicles and transport equipment (up 13%).

Month-on-month imports of vegetable products were down 34%, while those of machinery and electronics increased by 3%.

The cumulative trade deficit for this year of R18.665bn is 41% less than the shortfall recorded in the comparable period last year.

On a year-on-year basis, the R430m surplus is an improvement on the R2.5bn deficit recorded in April 2015.

Exports of R92.22bn were 10.1% more than the exports recorded in April 2015 of R83.74bn. Imports of R91.79bn were 6.4% more than the imports recorded in April 2015 of R86.24bn.

US No Longer World's Most Competitive Economy

 May 30  2016  22:00 l

Cape Town - The US has surrendered its status as the world’s most competitive economy after being overtaken by China Hong Kong and Switzerland, according to the World Competitive Rankings released on Monday.

The sheer power of the economy of the US is no longer sufficient to keep it at the top of the ranking, which it has led for the past three years, the IMD World Competitiveness Centre said in a statement.

The 2016 edition ranks China Hong Kong first, Switzerland second and the US third, with Singapore, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and Canada completing the top ten.

Pretoria – Reports of the imminent arrest of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan were being used to score political points and had subsequently thrown the rand into turmoil, National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams said on Monday.
