Don't Waste Your Time In Marketing Gimmicks

October 18 2012 l ndbs   By: Ndzavi Derrick Hlungwani

Have you ever received a call saying that you have been selected for a prize and all you have to do is attend a presentation to collect the prize and when you get there you are treated as if no one called you as you have to go through a registration process?  Well if that has not happened to you yet as long you have contact number just expect that call.  There is nothing wrong with marketing but the way it is done can make you a ‘Slaughter of the Innocent’ if you are wise.  How do you tell that is all gimmicks:

The caller becomes too friendly

You receive a call and before you can even say Hallo a person has already said their name and the reason for calling and telling you how special you are bla bla bla…  You can tell that a person has recited what is saying or is reading it somewhere while calling you.  How to deal with such callers you need to slow them down by asking questions like: “How did I qualify when I am in Credit bureau?”.  Most of them do not seem trained to handle such questions and happens to stammer and calling it a day.

The “guests” are not catered for

Should it happen that the caller wins you over to go attend the presentation or on your own will decide to attend, all you get at the venue is a jar of water, a branded pen on the table and a paper for you to take notes.  If a company is really interested in doing business with you shouldn’t they afford simple juice or tea with some snacks?  Their interest is in your wallet than a long lasting relationship with them.  And they even prepare your name tags with marking pens on your arrival.

The presenter prefers questions one on one

During the event or presentation the Presenter seems sharp, sharp I mean with sharp tongue also, speaking fast and giving no time for questions in-between.  They prefer to deal with questions after the presentation and one on one as they would not want anyone to steal the show and open others eyes like shareholder activist Theo Botha in companies AGM.  To certain extant while the presentation is going on other staff members are busy sorting forms to spot the potential preys.

Pushing you over the edge

Most facilitators of these presentations expect you to make up your mind there and then and the frustration shows in their face as it they are saying: “ I can’t waste my sweat for nothing, sign now”.  They do not give you time to think or go through the form but all they want to see you do is sign it.

Follow up with avalanche of emails

If you did not sign on the date you will receive pile and pile of emails telling you about special offer and what you are missing by not being part of their scheme.

Not all marketing campaigns are deceptive, you just need to apply your mind and make sure you are not coerced to sign.  Remember: TINSTAAFL ( there ain't no such thing as a free lunch).
