HARNESS Your Idea, No One Will

October 30 2012 l ndbs   By: Ndzavi Derrick Hlungwani

It is very exciting to wake up in the morning and have this business idea lingering in your mind.  You grab a pen and start writing as you feel that by the time you open the laptop or tablet the idea will have evaporated.

Your mind runs faster than your hand and you feel like calling your friends and share the idea.  All that your mind processes are the positive prospects that will make the idea a success and you even have a clear picture of the results the idea will bring and part of that is a mansion.

But hang on, there is a long way to go before you move in to that mansion, the following should be part of that long walk to the beautiful mansion:

Control and Direct it

‘To control and direct something for a purpose’ is one of the meanings of HARNESS.  Your idea may sound great but can evaporate with the going down of the sun.  The moment it lands on your head you have a responsibility to take a pause and process it prudently, writing down the what: what exactly is the idea all about, the how:  how can the idea be implemented and what will be required to do so, the when: when do you think it can start and the where: where do you intend starting the business.

Answering these critical questions from the start will help you meditate on the idea further and be able to close the potholes on your way success.

Keep it on Check

‘Keeping something on check’ is the other meaning of HARNESS.  Having interrogated the critical questions, it is now upon you to revisit them regularly.  There is nothing compelling you to get started in a jiffy, Rome was not built overnight neither was Carleton Centre, but like Twin Towers anything can be destroyed overnight.

Even though the business has not started yet, you still need to set aside time where you will do a check list and revamp the planning and strategy.  If your idea was conceived two years ago the chances are prices might have gone up or there are new developments in the market that will need you to reconsider some of the steps you have to take.

Put straps on it

You have to safeguard your idea and also have a business plan that will give a clear guideline on a way forward.  It will assist you in knowing how much will be required to get started and where can you source funds.

Tame, control, reign in, subdue, suppress, restrain, yoke, hitch, all these words are synonyms of HARNESS, and note that ‘putting straps’ is also the meaning of HARNESS.  If you don’t embrace the idea and own it, no one will.

Don't Waste Your Time In Marketing Gimmicks

October 18 2012 l ndbs   By: Ndzavi Derrick Hlungwani

Have you ever received a call saying that you have been selected for a prize and all you have to do is attend a presentation to collect the prize and when you get there you are treated as if no one called you as you have to go through a registration process?  Well if that has not happened to you yet as long you have contact number just expect that call.  There is nothing wrong with marketing but the way it is done can make you a ‘Slaughter of the Innocent’ if you are wise.  How do you tell that is all gimmicks:
