Who Stole The Cookie From The Cookie Jar?

November  28 2012 l ndbs   By: Ndzavi Derrick Hlungwani

"Lerato stole the cookie from the cookie jar. Who? Me? Yes you. Couldn’t be.  Then who stole the  cookie from the cookie jar?  Nkateko stole the cookie from the cookie jar. Who? Me? Yes you. Couldn’t be.  Then who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?  Derrick stole the cookie from the cookie jar. Who? Me? Yes you.  Couldn’t be.”

It does not matter how long the game can be played  what remains is that someone stole the cookie from the cookie jar and as long no one takes responsibility it can be played the whole day.  While playing this game in the car with Lerato and Nkateko it just reminded me how easy it can be to pass the buck.

Everyone is looking for someone to blame and no one takes responsibility.  This is what is happening today in business, even the business owner runs away from accountability.  For things to go well in a business everybody must be willing to:

Take responsibility

The jar cannot tell who dipped their fingers in to steal the cookie but someone has to come clean.  We love taking responsibility on something good to receive all the accolades, when things go wrong we look for the nearest person to blame.

Blame becomes a stigma as others remember it more than the good you might have done twenty times hence people are reluctant to come out after doing wrong.  If you know that you are the one who failed to lock the gate or the office, openly say so than wait for proof as that can be costly exercise.  You can be blamed but still earn respect by admitting your wrong doing than denying.

Clean the mess

Once you have admitted that you are wrong, start the process of fixing the problem.  You may not know how to repair a broken window glass but can help in finding the reasonable supplier who can fix it at a discount.  That shows your willingness to fix the problem.

Respond positively

Some people once they are found guilty of wrongdoing they start behaving differently towards those who are perceived to be on the right.  This is caused by fellow co-workers as some may continue to remind you of how bad things were or how much you have cost the company. Others even crack jokes about the situation.

Instead of  creating your own Ireland you need to live freely bearing in mind that there is still a lot of work to be done jointly and for that to happen you will need to work harmoniously with others.

Make open apology

The error you can make is to apologize before fixing the problem and cleaning the mess.  To many apology means that they are re-cused and cannot be held responsible any longer as any action that suggest so might mean that they were not forgiven.

Get down into fixing the problem with positive attitude and when the problem is solved then you can say how sorry you are that it happened and next time you will take precaution to prevent similar from happening.   You can send email of an apology to everyone affected than apologizing to one person only.

If the problem caused affected certain individual the most, a present can do with a note of apology.  We all make mistakes, but we do not make them same time so if is your turn do the honors and apply the above whether you are company CEO or a cleaner, we all have to account one way or the other.

Have you ever received a call saying that you have been selected for a prize and all you have to do is attend a presentation to collect the prize and when you get there you are treated as if no one called you as you have to go through a registration process?  Well if that has not happened to you yet as long you have contact number just expect that call.  There is nothing wrong with marketing but the way it is done can make you a ‘Slaughter of the Innocent’ if you are wise.  How do you tell that is all gimmicks:

One day I took my nephew for check-up as he was complaining of stomach pains for over three weeks.  The doctor we consulted with said that he is having a stomach neoplasms which is related to cancer.  That was the devastating news for the day but on second thought decided to see another doctor, this time I consulted with Gastro-enterologist who said that the boy was having peptic ulcer and prescribed medication for him.  It dawned on me after the second consultation that had the first doctor said he saw nothing and gave medication I would have relaxed based on his diagnosis

Balancing Business And Friends

August 13 2012 l ndbs   By: Ndzavi Derrick Hlungwani

Society has come to accept that being in business is about making money and nothing else.  Whenever someone is introduced as a business person, it does not matter how big or small your business is, automatically society places you in the class of “money hunters”.  This leads to some wanting to get too close to you for personal gains and others just want to be associated with you, whereas there are those who distance themselves from you as an indication that they are not in your life for what you have.   It is up to you as a business person to bring the balance between your business and your friends
